This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Beverly Scarlett.

Scarlett has long been a trailblazer in our community. She was the first black woman to have a solo law practice Hillsborough, the first to serve as an Orange County assistant DA, and eventually the first black woman in Orange County to serve as a district court judge. In her retirement, Judge Scarlett has turned her attention to uncovering some of our community’s long hidden history and shining a spotlight on long forgotten lives in a new book called Sheer Resilience. In her studies, she uncovered free communities of color that existed all over the United States before the Civil War.
