With more than 25 years of experience in the food industry, head chef Ramesh Dahal had many sources of inspiration to draw from when opening Momo’s Master.
Located on North Columbia Street in Chapel Hill, Momo’s Master brings Himalayan food to the vibrant downtown food scene, inspired by Dahal’s roots in the mountain region of Nepal, where he was born and raised. The restaurant’s specialty is momos – handmade dumplings that Dahal says many people eat three or four times a day in Nepal.
Diners can select from a range of flavorful momos stuffed with chicken, bison or veggies topped with a variety of different delicious sauces. You can also choose pan-fried or steamed dumplings, which are healthier alternatives to the deep-fried dumplings at many other restaurants.
“I decided to open Momo’s Master because I didn’t want to open another restaurant similar to any of the others in town,” Dahal said. “Chapel Hill needed a completely different and unique restaurant.”
Although Dahal has worked at restaurants in Raleigh – including the well-known Angus Barn and Le Farm Bakery – Momo’s Master is his first restaurant in Chapel Hill.
When creating the menu, Dahal drew from his years of expertise to include a wide variety of dishes from chicken wings to honey bacon brussels sprouts to chicken tikka masala. The eatery also offers delicious specialty drinks, such as Himalayan masala tea and mango lassis.
In addition to the momos, one of the most popular menu items is the pork belly buns.
“The pork belly buns are an all time favorite that people keep coming back for,” Dahal said.
Momo’s Master is located in the space previously occupied by Savor Eatery and Bakery. Dahal is good friends with the previous owner of Savor, which closed down after the pandemic started.
“She called me one day and said, ‘Ramesh, are you ready to take over the empty space?’”
A beautifully decorated and cheerful restaurant, Momo’s Master has quickly gained popularity among the Chapel Hill community because of its distinct, tasty dishes and Dahal’s focus on making customers happy,
“I love to help people,” he said. “I love to help customers when they come to dine. I want our customers to snap pictures to share with friends and family, and to leave happy.”
