Voting season is upon us once again.

Besides the national and statewide races, there are also some very important local races. Three Orange County Commissioner races are in need of voters, and two of those races directly pertain to the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area, the At-large seat and the District 1 seat, which represents very closely, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District.

County Commissioners are the final stop for all county revenue allocation, covering public schools, social services, parks, senior centers, public safety, and many other areas. Almost half of the county revenues are allocated to our public schools. And the Commissioners are the decision-makers on the Chapel Hill Carrboro School District tax rate, including its continued existence.

Given these facts, attributes of an effective and excellent commissioner would include:

  • Prior school board experience
  • A sound financial background, including budgeting, finance and accounting
  • A strong knowledge of a variety of county issues
  • Experiencing our public schools at all levels as a parent and volunteer
