This week’s Adopt-A-Pet is Barney from Goathouse Refuge in Chatham County! He’s roughly 10 months old, still a young little guy, and would fit right in with a new forever family!

January “Mews” from the Goathouse, by Jacquie Marx

It’s midwinter at the Goathouse Refuge; Chatham County, like our sister Triangle, has had no snow this season. We’re not complaining, and we hope that the huge amount of rain we’ve experienced has been equal to or better than the amount of precipitation necessary to keep our water tables stable. The natural beauty of our surroundings can’t be diminished no matter what the weather, thanks to the loblolly pines; live oaks; and earthy russet goodness of the soil at our refuge and the surrounding farms.

I have some new friends at the Goathouse… the goats! I talk to the goats whenever I walk down the path to the refuge, and they actually talk back. One day I fed them some green grapes, which they love. After that, I swear they know me. They greet me at the top of their enclosure and walk me down the path; who says goats aren’t smart? So the other day I tried petting them. I didn’t have grapes this time — who knew whether those goats would give me the time of day?

As I approached their fence, a goaty tan muzzle peeked over the top. I showed the nanny my hand, and she accepted it. Soon I was petting noses, scratching the base around horns, and introducing the goats to my own “kid,” aka “Little Voice.” I’d better find out when green grapes will be back in season. These babies are worth it.

That’s all for this month. Until February, this is the Voice of the Goathouse saying, “Baaaaaa for now!”
