Trending today: a move by the Japanese government to officially dissolve the Unification Church – strangely, in response to the manifesto written by the man who assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last year. Reminiscent, Aaron says, of something that happened in the U.S. in the 19th century: the assassination of President James Garfield in 1881, which ultimately led to the passage of a major civil service reform bill – with the help of a very unlikely champion.
