Every other Monday, Aaron is joined at 8:30 a.m. by Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling, for a longstanding regular segment called “What We’re Thinking,” looking at recent survey numbers and discussing what they tell us about American public opinion – election-related and otherwise.

Tom and Aaron discuss the results of a survey of Chapel Hill voters, showing a tight race for mayor and Town Council – and lots of undecided voters. Tom theorizes that the candidates may be struggling to appeal to Chapel Hillians, because the campaign has focused heavily on inside-baseball squabbles that don’t interest residents who don’t really know the players involved. That means all the candidates have a chance to make a difference in the campaign’s final two weeks, by rededicating themselves to the issues.

(As for the current numbers: Jess Anderson narrowly leads Adam Searing in the mayoral race, 30-29, with 40 percent still undecided – but those 40 percent tend to be more pro-GOP, more anti-Town Council, more pro-CHALT, and more inclined to think Chapel Hill is growing too fast, and all of those indicators are good for Searing. In the Town Council race, Melissa McCullough, Theodore Nollert, Amy Ryan, and Elizabeth Sharp have the most support – but Renuka Soll, David Adams, Breckany Eckhardt and Jon Mitchell are all within a few points of the leaders, and the vast majority of Chapel Hillians are still undecided.)
