Every other Monday, Aaron is joined at 8:30 a.m. by Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling, for a longstanding regular segment called “What We’re Thinking,” looking at recent survey numbers and discussing what they tell us about American public opinion – election-related and otherwise.

This week, Tom and Aaron reflect on an odd but consistent phenomenon: no matter what happens in this presidential election, the polls barely budge, and Tom suspects that’s likely to be the case again – even after an assassination attempt on one of the leading presidential candidates. Tom also considers another important question: while the shooter’s motive isn’t clear, the incident is definitely a reminder of our dangerously high levels of polarization – so what needs to happen in order for that to start diminishing?
