Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam is challenging incumbent U.S. House Rep. Valerie Foushee in the 2026 Democratic primary. That’s a rematch of a primary in 2022, which Foushee won by nine points – but Tom says Allam may have the edge this time around, because Democratic voters are now more likely to want an outspoken progressive. (Specifically it’s younger Democratic voters who are leaning that way: so Tom says Allam will likely win the youth vote while Foushee wins the senior vote, and it may all come down to who turns out on primary day. Will UNC voters make the final difference in the end?)
