I look forward to these fifteen minute segments! But the discussions, especially on topics like abortion, could easily fill more time! Thanks for giving a little bit of air to the conservative voice in our community.
The host’s suggestion that the objection presented by George Carlin is actually a legitimate argument is preposterous. Life is a process, from conception to death. There is no magic moment of transition from not human to human. It is a human being from the moment of conception. Once we decide that there are limits to who gets supposedly human rights (including the right not to be murdered), once we accept that we have a “right to choose” where to draw the lines, those lines can be moved over time in any way the fickle winds of fashion might blow. At the time of Roe v Wade, some critics of the decision argued that soon people would be talking about killing old people. People scoffed at this line of reasoning, because euthanasia was at that time far from the realm of respectability. It was only maybe a decade later that talk of doctors helping people kill themselves started to become commonplace. In the future, we may see pressure being put on some older people to kill themselves, just as many women, particularly younger, more vulnerable ones, now experience pressure to kill their own kid. Sometimes this comes from family and friends, sometimes even from their doctor.
What do we do with inconvenient people? This is really the question. What do we do with inconvenient people? Do we kill them, even if they have committed no crime?
All the talk about abortion simply being medical care is a lie, often accepted uncritically by gullible young people. It will never stand up to scrutiny either philosophically or experientially. Carlin’s alleged argument is nothing more than a joke.
