97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com are your headquarters for local news and local voices in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Every Wednesday morning, Chapel Hill Public Library director Susan Brown joins 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck for “Talking Books,” a weekly segment of book recommendations, of all genres and for all ages. (Susan also heads up Chapel Hill’s Community Arts and Culture department, so they’ll often talk about upcoming festivals and other cultural events as well.)

Click here to listen back to the full Talking Books archive – and tune in to “This Morning with Aaron Keck” Wednesday mornings at 8:30 on 97.9 The Hill to hear those conversations live.

Today, Aaron is joined not by Susan but by local author Daniel Wallace, who’s releasing his new book “This Isn’t Going To End Well” on April 11.

His first non-fiction book, “This Isn’t Going To End Well” tells the story of Wallace’s brother-in-law, the acclaimed cartoonist/writer William Nealy, who took his own life in 2001 at the age of 48 after a long internalized struggle with depression and addiction. He and Wallace had been close for decades, and Wallace says he owes much of his career as a writer to Nealy – but that only compounded the flood of conflicting feelings he experienced in the months and years afterward, culminating after 2011 when he came into possession of Nealy’s private journals.

Visit DanielWallace.org for more information about Wallace and a link to preorder the book.

Wallace stopped by 97.9 The Hill to chat about the book – which reminded Aaron of his own favorite book, “Fun Home,” another deeply personal autobiographical work about an imperfect father figure with a troubled hidden inner life.
