When reaching out to friends and family, when is it right to call, and when is it right to just send a text? Aaron chats with local author and etiquette expert Steven Petrow, who’s recently written about that very question.

Key rules: texting is better when it’s not a big thing, but phone conversations are better when it’s a deep or serious issue. But phone calls are seen as intrusive, so text ahead of time when you can. Generally speaking, don’t bother leaving voicemails. (Though there are exceptions, like singing “Happy Birthday.”) Most importantly, be aware of the other person and be accommodating of their desires and their comfort level: for instance, older people are often more comfortable with the phone, so reach out accordingly!
