With the federal shutdown still ongoing, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says they’re going to stop distributing SNAP food benefits on Saturday, November 1. That will directly affect 1.4 million North Carolinians who receive those benefits, including 8,700 in Orange County alone. How are local organizations mobilizing to help their neighbors in this time of need? And how can we contribute to the effort?
Aaron Keck speaks with Katisha Paige, the director of development for the local hunger-relief organization TABLE: they serve more than 1,100 kids every week in Orange County, with hundreds more on a wait list. Paige says they’re expecting a big spike in demand and they’re already gearing up to meet the need, but they need as much help as they can get: they’re encouraging everyone to volunteer their time or donate food or funds to support the cause. (All donations are welcome, but monetary donations are most helpful.)
