Due to adverse weather conditions around the Triangle causing hazardous road conditions, the UNC men’s basketball program is encouraging Tar Heel fans within driving distance to stay home from Wednesday night’s game against NC State, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The program is opening the arena to “anyone who can safely walk to the game” for free.

“We certainly want our fans here to cheer on our team – but more importantly, we want everyone to be safe,’’ said athletic director Bubba Cunningham. “To those on and around campus who can join us, please walk in; we know you will provide a great atmosphere. To those who can’t make it, we know you will be supporting our team from home.”

Fans with previously purchased tickets to the game will have first rights to their seats, but any vacant seat will be made available. Doors to the Smith Center open at 5:30 p.m., 90 minutes before tip-off.

Chapel Hill Transit has already announced it will not be running its regular Tar Heel Express route to and from the Smith Center. For other road and school closures and schedule changes around the community, click here.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office and other local officials described hazardous road conditions Wednesday evening around the university campus and beyond. Sheriff Charles Blackwood said the roads are “treacherous,” and detailed a variety of vehicle crashes and pile-ups caused by people losing control on slick surfaces.

The announcement came after UNC canceled classes all of Wednesday and Thursday morning due to the forecasted winter weather. The campus remains under Condition 2, which states all non-mandatory employees should remain away from campus, until at least 11:59 a.m. on Thursday.
