UNC’s already thin wide receiver room took a major hit over the weekend. Senior Antoine Green, a steady veteran presence at the position, suffered an injury — reportedly to his collarbone — during an intra-squad scrimmage over the weekend. Head coach Mack Brown projects Green to be out 6-10 weeks.

“It was a hitch [route], and he turned inside, and he got hit just running,” Brown told reporters Monday afternoon. “Linebacker hits him, and he gets hurt.”

According to Brown, Green had surgery on Sunday and reported to team meetings Monday morning. Brown said he hopes Green’s recovery will be “on the 6 side” of the 6-10 weeks timeline, which could potentially mean Green would be back for Carolina’s Week 4 game against Notre Dame in Chapel Hill.

Green had the best season of his career in 2021, catching 31 passes for 612 yards (an average of 19.7 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. It also marked the first time Green had played a complete season, as his first three years in Chapel Hill were marred by other injuries, including a gruesome broken leg suffered during his freshman campaign.

Green’s absence leaves Carolina’s receiver room severely lacking in experience after junior Josh Downs. Junior Justin Olson and sophomore J.J. Jones have combined to catch just 13 passes during their collegiate careers. No other receiver currently on the roster has recorded a catch.
