The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team’s perfect season went up in smoke Friday in Durham, as the Tar Heels fell 5-2 to the Blue Devils in the regular season finale.

It was Carolina’s first loss of the spring season, and its first ACC regular season loss since April 20, 2018, when UNC also lost to Duke by an identical 5-2 score. The Tar Heels had won their previous 46 ACC regular season matches.

UNC lost the doubles point and never recovered, as Cameron Morra, Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty each took rare losses in the singles portion of the match. Carson Tanguilig and Reilly Tran took Carolina’s only singles wins of the evening.

Despite the loss, Carolina is still the No. 1 seed in this week’s ACC Championship in Rome, GA. UNC will receive a double bye into the quarterfinals, where they will face either No. 8 seed Florida State or No. 9 seed Notre Dame. The Blue Devils are the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Once the ACC Championship concludes, NCAA regional play will begin at campus sites on May 6. Carolina remains a virtual lock to host a regional in Chapel Hill.
