As the Diamond Heels arrived in Omaha on Wednesday for the College World Series, a trio of their players earned All-American honors by two publications.
Pitchers Jason DeCaro and Caden Glauber earned spots on All-America teams as awarded by Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Perfect Game named Glauber to its first team — just one day after the publication named the right-hander a co-recipient of its National Freshman Pitcher of the Year Award — while the NCBWA named him to its third team for all players and first team for freshman All-Americans. Meanwhile, the NCBWA gave DeCaro a first-team spot and Perfect Game slotted the Diamond Heels ace into its All-America Third Team.
Carolina shortstop Jake Schaffner also picked up third-team honors from the NCBWA, rounding out the Heels’ representation on the year-end awards lists.
The trio of players now bring the UNC baseball program’s All-American honors total to 71 players, with DeCaro and Glauber becoming the 29th and 30th first-team honorees. Their awards mark the program’s first first-team winners since Aaron Sabato was honored in 2019.
DeCaro — a projected first-day MLB Draft pick following this college season — was UNC’s opening day starter and worked most of the season as its series-opening pitcher. In three seasons and 51 starts with the Diamond Heels, he has amassed a 26-6 record with a 3.29 ERA and 232 strikeouts. His junior season, statistically, has been his best yet: going into the College World Series, DeCaro boasts an 11-2 record, a 2.28 ERA and 84 strikeouts across 87 innings of work. The starting pitcher sits with the second-most wins in the country — and his most recent, a complete game shut-out of the USC Trojans in Game 2 of the super regionals, helped propel Carolina to Omaha.
Glauber, meanwhile, has dazzled as a freshman. UNC baseball is undefeated in the 25 games where the freshman has made an appearance on the mound, either as a starter or relief pitcher. As of Wednesday, he holds the seventh-best ERA in the country (2.20) and has 99 strikeouts. During the winner-take-all game of the super regional, Glauber started and struck out a career high 11 batters.
Schaffner joined the Diamond Heels program after transferring from North Dakota State last year. Batting as the leadoff hitter for much of Carolina’s season, the junior holds a .358 batting average and leads the team in extra base hits (19 doubles, 7 triples, 6 home runs) and stolen bases (25). His also brings critical defense to UNC’s infield, helping turn 29 double players and recording a .986 fielding percentage across 62 of the team’s 63 games this season.
The trio of Schaffner, Glauber and DeCaro are slated to be back in action on Friday, as the Diamond Heels face Ole Miss for their first game of the College World Series. First pitch from Omaha is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
