UNC junior running back Elijah Hood will miss the upcoming bowl game against Stanford on December 30 for medical reasons but will return to UNC for his senior season.

The university announced the news in a release on Thursday night.

Officials say Hood will remain in North Carolina when the Tar Heels travel to El Paso, Texas, to take on Stanford in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.

Hood issued a statement through the university:

“I’m disappointed I cannot be with my football brothers for the bowl game in Texas, but it’s best for me to stay home and fully recover. I look forward to returning to the field in 2017 for my senior year and having the opportunity to represent UNC along with my teammates. I appreciate Coach Fedora and the staff for helping me make the best decision for my future.”

Hood has been a key piece of the UNC offensive attack during his three years at Carolina.

Stanford star running back Christian McCaffery announced earlier this week he would be sitting out the bowl game to prepare for the National Football League draft.
