Tight end Bryson Nesbit will be out indefinitely for UNC football after suffering a wrist injury that requires surgery during the Tar Heels’ game on Saturday.
According to an alert from the program, Nesbit hurt his wrist in the first quarter vs. Georgia Tech but played through the injury. The extent of the injury — which Inside Carolina reported as a broken wrist — means the senior from Charlotte, N.C. will undergo surgery on Tuesday. UNC football did not provide any expected timeline of recovery.
The news means a Carolina receiving corps that has underwhelmed to start 2024 will lose its top target. Nesbit leads the team in receptions this season with 24 catches for 264 yards, including three receptions during the 41-34 loss on Saturday. He has also caught three touchdowns, which is tied with fellow tight end John Copenhaver for most on the roster.
Nesbit earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2023 and led the conference in receiving yards and touchdowns after a breakout campaign. Behind him and Copenhaver on the depth chart, UNC has sophomore tight end Jake Johnson — the brother of injured quarterback Max Johnson — redshirt freshman Julien Randolph and true freshman Ryan Ward.
UNC (3-4, 0-3 conference) is off on a bye for the weekend of Oct. 19, with the team’s next game on the road at Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 26.
