Jamal Haynes ran for a 68-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining to break Tar Heel hearts in Kenan Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Georgia Tech rumbled to a 41-34 win. It’s the Yellow Jackets’ fourth straight win against UNC.

The Yellow Jackets totaled a whopping 371 rushing yards and averaged 7.7 yards per rush on the day, as Haynes and quarterback Haynes King each topped 100 yards and scored twice. On the other side, Carolina rushed for 201 yards — 137 of which came from Omarion Hampton. Jacolby Criswell accounted for three total touchdowns: two rushing and one passing. The touchdown through the air went to J.J. Jones, who was wearing Tylee Craft’s No. 13 jersey. The entire team honored Craft for Cancer Awareness Week, with several coaches wearing shirts featuring his jersey number.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, Carolina briefly tied the game in the final minute on a short Noah Burnette field goal. But Haynes’ run erased any doubt, silencing the sparse crowd at Kenan.

“There’s a thin line between winning and losing,” said head coach Mack Brown. “There’s so many things we can fix that give us a chance to be a better team and win the last five games. And that’s what we’ll do.”

The loss is Carolina’s fourth in a row on the season after a 3-0 start. It’s the first time the Tar Heels have lost four straight regular-season games since the 2018 season, which was Larry Fedora’s last as head coach at UNC.

Carolina will be back in action when it visits Virginia on Saturday, October 26. The Tar Heels have a bye this coming week.
