After 12 years at the helm of the UNC women’s golf program, head coach Jan Mann announced her retirement on Wednesday.
Mann took over the Tar Heels prior to the 2009-10 season after spending eight seasons at her alma mater UNCW from 1994-2002 and five as the head coach at Virginia from 2002-07.
“Coach Mann has been a devoted teacher and mentor to student-athletes for more than a quarter of a century, and we appreciate her dedicated service to her teams, universities and the game of golf,” UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. “Her student-athletes always represented Carolina in the highest standards in the classroom and on the golf course. Our best wishes to Jan and her family for a peaceful and enjoyable time ahead with family and friends.”
Mann led UNC to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the championship round four times–finishing as high as eighth back in 2011.
The Tar Heels won a total of six tournaments under Mann’s leadership, with five players also winning individual events.
“While it is bittersweet to announce my retirement, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and I am excited for the future of our golf program,” Mann said. “I want to thank Carolina for the opportunity to be a part of such a great university, Bubba Cunningham and the entire athletic department for their leadership and support and most of all my student-athletes throughout the years who have allowed me to be a small part of their journey.”
