UNC is heading into the home stretch of the college football season, while basketball is just getting started. But other Carolina teams spent their weekend in the midst of conference tournament action.
The Carolina Field Hockey team can now add ACC Champion to their introduction. The third-ranked Tar Heels knocked off the top seed Syracuse 2-1 in overtime, in Charlottesville on Sunday, to claim Carolina’s 19th ACC title, and its first since 2012.
The NCAA tournament begins on Saturday, where the Tar Heels are the number two seed. Carolina will play the winner of the Fairfield-Boston University play-in game.
Meanwhile, Syracuse knocked off Carolina in men’s soccer on Sunday. The second-seeded Tar Heels were upset by the seventh-seed Syracuse. The Orange won the game 4-3 in penalty kicks. Carolina entered the game ranked third in the country. It’s now a waiting game for Carolina, as the NCAA Tournament bids will be handed out on Monday, November 16th.
UNC women’s soccer lost a matchup with Florida State by a two-to-one score on Friday night in the A-C-C semifinals. Carolina came into the matchup ranked eighth in the country while the Seminoles checked in at number four. This was the second time on the season the Tar Heels lost to the defending-national-champion Florida State by one goal this season. Florida State went on to knock off top-ranked Virginia on Sunday to claim the Seminoles third-straight conference championship.
