With a strong close to the regular season and two wins in the ACC Tournament, UNC basketball was selected as the No. 8 seed in the South Region in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
UNC finished the season 18-10, with a 10-6 record in conference play. The Tar Heels will play No. 9 seed Wisconsin in Indiana on Friday.
“We are ecstatic to be playing in the NCAA Tournament,” said UNC head coach Roy Williams in a release. “There were a couple of times during the season when we were wondering whether or not we would make the field, but our team kept getting a little bit better and better. So I’m just ecstatic for these kids, who have endured so much due to Covid and have an opportunity to continue their season.”
Roy Williams’ squad has won six of its last nine games — including a pair of wins in the ACC Tournament before losing to No. 15 Florida State, 69-66.
The winner of UNC-Wisconsin will advance to play the winner of No. 1-seed Baylor and No. 16 Hartford on Sunday.
Wisconsin finished the season 17-12, including a 10-10 Big 10 record. The Badgers fell 62-57 to Iowa in the second round of the Big 10 Tournament last week.
The Badgers finished at No. 26 in NET rankings with a 5-10 record against Q1 opponents and 5-2 against Q2 opponents. Carolina finished at No. 32 in NET with a 3-9 record against Q1 opponents and 8-0 against Q2 opponents.
“This will be an unusual tournament to say the least, but particularly for our coaches, because we have so many young players who will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time,” said Williams. “Wisconsin will be a big-time challenge, but we played our way into our seed and we will have to play very well to advance. But we are looking forward to having that opportunity.”
Tip-off time is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. from Purdue’s Mackey Arena in Indiana. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
