Despite a series win over Virginia Tech over the weekend, the North Carolina Tar Heels dropped two spots in the D1Baseball rankings released on Monday.
UNC checks into the new rankings at No. 15, dropping down from No. 13 in last week’s edition.
The Tar Heels went 3-2 last week but suffered two bad losses, to UNC – Asheville on Wednesday night and the series finale to Virginia Tech on Sunday.
UNC is one of six teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference spread throughout the rankings. The Miami Hurricanes sit atop the rankings, jumping up from the No. 3 spot. Florida State joins Miami in the top five as the Seminoles are now the fourth-ranked team in the country. Louisville (8), NC State (12) and Clemson (16) join North Carolina in the rankings.
UNC right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen was named the co-ACC Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Friday night setting a career-high with 13 strikeouts. Those 13 Ks were the most by a Tar Heel pitcher since Matt Harvey fanned 15 Clemson Tigers in 2010. Gallen lowered his ERA to 1.93 on the season. Fellow UNC starter JB Bukauskas matched Gallen with 13 strikeouts during the Saturday win over Virginia Tech.
The Tar Heels will take on No. 8 South Carolina on Wednesday in Charlotte in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday that was postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast.
