CHARLOTTE– P.J. is not out of the woods yet. Head basketball coach Roy Williams says the NCAA will have a say in the length of P.J. Hairston’s suspension.
Speaking at the annual ACC basketball media day, Coach Williams says the length of Hairston’s absence will be announced before the Tar Heels tip things off against Oakland Nov. 8.
“I don’t want to share everything with you, and in your life you don’t want to share everything with me,” Coach Williams says. “[…] It’s a team, and we keep things in the locker room.”
Hairston has been practicing with Carolina. Coach Williams suspended the junior guard indefinitely after he was charged with reckless driving and speeding in July.
“Well, crap, the NCAA made a decision on Johnny Manziel in freaking two days,” Williams said, referring to the Texas A&M quarterback who received a half-game suspension after being accused of accepting payments for autographs. “So it’s not all my choice kind of thing.”
The use of rental cars from a convicted felon by Hairston has long been believed to open the avenue for the NCAA’s involvement on the grounds of impermissible benefits.
The timetable for the NCAA ruling is unknown at this time.
