The Carolina Athletics community and Tar Heels across the world received shocking news on Sunday — as longtime UNC women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance announced his retirement after 47 seasons in charge of the program.
While many knew the day would come at some point for Dorrance to step away, some were shocked as he announced the decision to step away from the program as Carolina is days away from starting its fall seasons. But — like his coaching style and dominance in the sport — Dorrance did things his own way, saying he “didn’t have the same energy it takes to give 100 percent to this year’s team.”

Spent seven years, 168 games as UNC's women's soccer SID (1988, 1990-95) and they lost three games and tied five others. A special time led by a uniquely special coach with an amazing array of talented players. https://t.co/vt88Sg8KLj

First met Anson Dorrance in the fall of 1988 to write this piece for the tabloid newspaper the @UNCAlumniReview published at the time. "What more could you ask for here?" he mused. "We're just thankful for the opportunity to play." Godspeed in retirement, sir. @uncwomenssoccer pic.twitter.com/q8QLQ1s1So
