
Seniors Alexa Graham and Sara Daavettila each won their opening round matches on Sunday in Orlando as part of the NCAA Women’s Singles Championship, giving UNC two players in the second round.
Graham–ranked No. 41 in the country–defeated No. 28 Akvile Parazinskaite of Kentucky in quick fashion 6-1, 6-0.
The tournament’s No. 2 overall seed, Daavettila, needed three sets to defeat No. 48 Solymar Colling of San Diego by a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
While those two were able to move on to play another day, three other Tar Heels saw their seasons come to an end on Sunday.
No. 32 Makenna Jones fell to Georgia’s Meg Kowalski (No. 20) 6-2, 6-2, while No. 27 Cameron Morra also lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to No. 18 Irina Cantos Siemers of Ohio State.
Freshman Fiona Crawley–who went 30-0 in singles play during her rookie season and earned the No. 36 national ranking–suffered her first collegiate loss to No. 46 Ayana Akli of Maryland by a score of 7-5, 7-5.
Graham and Daavettila will resume play on Monday, with Graham facing No. 9 Natasha Subash (Virginia) and Daavettila taking on No. 55 Lea Ma (Georgia).
