The ACC released the 2021 football schedule on Thursday, with UNC set to play seven home games and five on the road.
High expectations will await the Tar Heels, who will begin their season with a bang against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The date for that game will either be Thursday, Sept. 2 or Friday, Sept. 3 pending a later announcement by the league.
The home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 11 against Georgia State. Four of the following five games will also be at home, starting against Virginia on Sept. 18.
A road trip to Atlanta for a game with Georgia Tech on Sept. 25 then sets the Tar Heels up with three straight home dates against Duke (Oct. 2), Florida State (Oct. 9) and Miami (Oct. 16) to begin the month of October.
The Tar Heels will have a bye week after taking on Miami, providing extra preparation before traveling to face Notre Dame on Oct. 30. The Fighting Irish are returning to independent status in 2021 after moonlighting in the ACC during the 2020 season.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the schedule is a non-conference game against Wake Forest, with the Tar Heels hosting a non-conference game on Nov. 6. It will be the second time in the last three seasons that the programs have played without the game counting in the ACC standings.
On short rest, the Tar Heels will then head up north to play Pittsburgh on Thursday, Nov. 11.
The final home game of the season comes against Wofford on Nov. 20, followed by the regular season finale in Raleigh against NC State on Friday, Nov. 26.
