ACC commissioner John Swofford announced Wednesday that UNC forward Janelle Bailey has been named the league’s women’s basketball Rookie of the Year.
The 6-foot-4-inch native of Matthews, North Carolina has been a revelation for head coach Sylvia Hatchell in the frontcourt this season–leading all freshmen in the conference with 15.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
Bailey earned the ACC Rookie of the Week honor a whopping seven times during the regular season, and becomes the fourth Tar Heel in the last six years to be selected as the conference Rookie of the Year.
In an overtime victory over Wake Forest on Jan. 14, Bailey posted career highs of 30 points and 19 rebounds.
Her 12 double-doubles also ranked fourth among all players in the ACC.
Although the Tar Heels (14-15, 4-12 ACC) finished 12th in the conference standings this season, Bailey provided plenty of reasons to be excited about the future of the program.
