Both UNC soccer teams grabbed wins on Thursday evening, as the fifth-ranked women’s team defeated No. 16 Georgia at Dorrance Field and the sixth-ranked men’s team won on the road at UAB. It was the regular-season opener for the men.

The women’s game saw plenty of offense, as the Tar Heels held off the Bulldogs 4-3 despite holding a decisive 19-6 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs only had three shots on goal, each of which found the back of the net. Meanwhile, Carolina forced nine saves out of the Georgia keeper.

Kate Faasse, the hero of UNC’s comeback win at Colorado last weekend, opened the scoring in the 35th minute, tapping in a long cross-field pass from Makenna Dominguez. Georgia equalized in the 52nd minute, but Carolina’s Olivia Thomas answered with two goals in a span of less than three minutes to give UNC a 3-1 advantage. The teams then traded goals in the 65th (Georgia), 71st (Carolina’s Bella Gaetino) and 90th (Georgia) minutes to end a frenzied second half.

The Tar Heels are now 3-0 on the season and have scored multiple goals in all three games. Next, UNC faces Arizona at Dorrance Field at noon on Sunday.

There was far less scoring on the men’s side, as Carolina was outshot by UAB in Alabama but made the most of its best chance in a 1-0 win. After a scoreless first half, the Tar Heels earned a penalty kick in the 71st minute off a foul inside the box, and Martin Vician slotted it home to give UNC its first goal of the 2024 season. The Blazers would manage just one more shot in the final minutes, despite Carolina playing with 10 men after a red card in the 81st minute.

Vician ended the night with one of just six shots for the Tar Heels and one of only two that was on target. On the other side, UAB forced only a single save out of Carolina keeper Andrew Cordes.

UNC will return to Chapel Hill and Dorrance field for its home opener against Cal Baptist on August 25 at 7:30 p.m.
