UNC fans will get one last look at quarterback Sam Howell before his name is called at the NFL Draft. The Reese’s Senior Bowl announced Tuesday that Howell had accepted an invitation to play in the 2022 edition of the game.
Howell becomes the second Tar Heel to have accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl, after linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel did so in November. He is the sixth quarterback to join the game’s roster, joining a group which includes Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett and Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder.
Howell is currently ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 55 overall player in the 2022 NFL Draft class by CBS Sports, though a strong showing in the Senior Bowl against other prospects could certainly change that. He has the opportunity to become UNC’s first first-round pick in the NFL Draft since quarterback Mitch Trubisky went No. 2 overall to the Chicago Bears in 2017.
The Senior Bowl provides a final opportunity for NFL Draft prospects to showcase their skills in game action in front of pro scouts, and has been played annually since 1950. The 2022 edition of the game will take place on Saturday, February 5 in Mobile, AL, and will be broadcast on NFL Network.
