UNC football beat Notre Dame on Saturday.

No, not that one.

The UNC men’s soccer team traveled up to South Bend and headed back to Chapel Hill with its first ACC win of the season Saturday evening, topping the defending ACC Tournament champion Fighting Irish 1-0.

Milo Garvanian’s penalty kick goal in the 30th minute, his third goal of the season, put the Tar Heels in front for good. After Carolina held the Irish offense in check in the first half, allowing just a single shot, the team had to weather an offensive storm in the second. Notre Dame took nine shots in the final 45 minutes, forcing Carolina goalkeeper Andrew Cordes to make a pair of clutch saves to preserve the lead.

When the clock finally hit 90 minutes, Carolina had secured its first ACC win and first true road win of the season, improving to 4-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play. The Tar Heels have allowed just a single goal in their last four matches. That run of strong play will be put to the test next Friday, as defending national champions Clemson will pay a visit to Dorrance Field. The Tigers defeated Carolina in last season’s ACC Tournament before winning the College Cup.
