Matthew Acosta scored in the 84th minute to help Carolina salvage a 1-1 draw at Notre Dame on Friday night. The Tar Heels still have just one loss on the season.

UNC fell behind midway through the second half, as the Irish’s Matthew Roou beat Carolina goalkeeper Andrew Cordes for the game’s opening goal. The Tar Heels knocked on the door over the next few minutes, with both Acosta and Martin Vician firing shots on net. But it took until the match’s final 10 minutes for Acosta – a senior who transferred to UNC from Rutgers during the offseason – to find an equalizer. Acosta received a pass well outside the Notre Dame box and sent a soaring shot past the Irish keeper for the goal. It was Acosta’s first goal of the season.

Neither team would fire a shot in the final 6:06 of game time. The draw was borne out statistically: the teams were level in shots on goal (four), saves (three) and fouls (nine). Carolina held a slim 10-9 advantage in overall shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

UNC is now 7-1-4 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. The Tar Heels will stay on the road for their next match, visiting William & Mary on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
