The UNC men’s soccer team fought hard but eventually fell to No. 17 Clemson 1-0 at Dorrance Field Monday night. The match had been postponed from Friday, September 30 due to Hurricane Ian.

Carolina is now 4-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. Clemson, the defending national champions, is now 8-2.

The match was an even one throughout, with each team firing six shots and two shots on goal. Carolina had two quality chances in the first half, but both were saved by the Tiger goalkeeper. The defense was stout, holding Clemson without a shot on goal for the match’s first 58 minutes.

A Clemson goal in the 77th minute off a corner kick proved to be the match-winner, and Carolina couldn’t manufacture any chances in the remaining 13 minutes. UNC goalie Andrew Cordes finished with one save.

The two teams combined for 33 fouls in 90 minutes, 22 of which were on Clemson. Two yellow cards were issued to both sides.

Carolina’s next two matches will both come at home. First, the Tar Heels will host Virginia Tech at Dorrance Field on Friday at 7 p.m., before VCU visits the following Tuesday.
