The No. 24 UNC men’s soccer team completed an unbeaten weekend at Dorrance Field Sunday night, defeating visiting South Florida by a 1-0 margin. A first-half penalty kick goal from Milo Garvanian was all the Tar Heels needed.

The veteran Garvanian, a graduate midfielder from Albuquerque, N.M., has been a busy man to start the season. Sunday night’s goal was his second in two matches, after he scored just four all of last season. Garvanian fired two of UNC’s 18 shots on the night, which far outpaced the Bulls’ eight.

In fact, Carolina could easily have scored twice more in the second half, as shots from Akeim Clarke and Key White each hit the woodwork. Clarke and White combined for eight shots.

In net, redshirt freshman Andrew Cordes earned his first collegiate clean sheet, making three saves in the shutout win. Cordes is a transfer from the University of Portland, where he did not play at all as a true freshman.

The win is the 150th in the career of UNC head coach Carlos Somoano, who is in his 12th season in Chapel Hill. Win no. 151 could be a bit of a trickier task, as No. 18 Florida International will visit Dorrance Field on Saturday, September 3. It’s the first-ever meeting between the Tar Heels and Panthers in men’s soccer.
