The UNC men’s lacrosse team stayed hot Saturday against Providence, using 15 first-half goals to blow out the Friars 25-8 at Dorrance Field. The team has now won three straight games for the first time all season.

Graduate attackman Logan McGovern collected a hat trick within the game’s first 10 minutes, accounting for half of a 6-0 Carolina run to begin the game. McGovern scored his fourth goal with two minutes remaining in the first quarter to cap off a dominant 15 minutes of action which ended with the Tar Heels leading 9-2. By those standards, the second quarter was relatively quiet, but UNC still held a commanding 15-3 lead at halftime.

McGovern scored once more in the third quarter, and it wasn’t until the final 15 minutes that Carolina finally took its foot off the gas with a 23-4 lead. Twelve different Tar Heels found the back of the net, with Trevor Deubner, Andrew Tyeryar and Sean Goldsmith each also posting hat tricks. Carolina outshot the Friars 46-32 and sent 32 shots onto the Providence net.

The Tar Heels are now 7-3 on the season and just one win away from equaling their 2022 total, though the final four games of the season are all challenging. First up is a home clash with No. 3 Virginia in Chapel Hill on Friday, before a neutral-site game against Syracuse and a home-and-home with No. 1 Notre Dame concludes the regular season.
