Carolina is going dancing.

The Tar Heels received a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament Sunday night as one of the field’s Last Four In, and thus will compete in the First Four play-in games in Dayton this week. Carolina will face fellow No. 11 seed San Diego State Tuesday, with the winner facing No. 6 seed Ole Miss Friday in Milwaukee as part of the tournament’s South Region.

UNC enters the tournament with a 22-13 overall record and 13-7 regular-season mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels reached the semifinals of the ACC Tournament before falling to No. 1 Duke 74-71.

This is the first time UNC will have competed in the First Four, which was introduced when the NCAA Tournament field expanded to 68 teams for the 2010-11 season. It is not, however, the first time UNC will have played an NCAA Tournament game in Dayton. The Tar Heels competed there in their first- and second-round matchups in 2006, beating No. 14 seed Murray State before losing to No. 11 seed George Mason.

UNC has now qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times in four seasons under head coach Hubert Davis. The program narrowly avoided missing the tournament entirely for the second time in three seasons, something which hadn’t happened since missing the tournament in consecutive years in 2002 and 2003.

The Tar Heels will play in the late game on Tuesday, with tip-off projected to be around 9:10 p.m. EDT. 97.9 The Hill will carry the game broadcast, and television coverage will be on TruTV.
