Carolina scored 62 points in the second half to roll past visiting American at the Dean Smith Center on Friday night. The Tar Heels led 43-34 at the half and won by the score of 107-55.
Five different Tar Heels scored in double figures, with Jalen Washington and Elliot Cadeau tying for the team lead with 18 points. For Washington, his 18 points were a career high. R.J. Davis and Seth Trimble each added 13, and Cade Tyson scored 11 off the bench. Cadeau logged an efficient offensive night, shooting 6-9 from the floor while adding eight assists, four steals, three rebounds and just one turnover.
Davis’ shooting struggles continued, as the All-American finished 5-13 and made only one three-pointer. The Tar Heels didn’t make a single three in the entire first half, during which American led by as many as five points at 18-13 and stayed until the halftime buzzer sounded.
But the story changed quickly in the second half, as Carolina used an 18-5 run to turn a 52-40 lead into 70-45, then rattled off a 29-6 run to grow that lead to 99-51 by the final minutes. UNC shot a scorching 22-35 (62.9 percent) in the second half and 7-16 (43.8 percent) on threes. American, meanwhile, made just five total shots in the final 20 minutes.
Now 2-1 on the season, the Tar Heels will now embark on their longest road trip of the season, visiting the Hawai’ian islands for four games. The first of those is a true road test in Manoa, HI against Hawai’i on Friday, November 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 a.m. Eastern time (7:30 p.m. Hawai’i time). After that, Carolina will play three games in three days at the Maui Invitational on November 25, 26 and 27.
