The UNC field hockey team earned a pair of wins in Philadelphia to sweep the ACC-Ivy Invitational and improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Tar Heels started the weekend off with a dominant effort against event hosts Penn, shutting the Quakers out 4-0 on Friday. Carolina took the lead just 2:23 into the game with the first of freshman Charly Bruder’s two goals on the day. Senior Alli Meehan doubled that lead in the second quarter, and goals from Burder and Paityn Wirth put the game away before the start of the fourth. UNC outshot the Quakers 14-3 on the day while only allowing one shot on goal.

Sunday’s win against No. 10 Princeton proved to be much more difficult. The Tigers took the lead after 4:04 and held it until midway through the fourth quarter. Another dominant effort in possession by the Tar Heels finally paid off when Ryleigh Heck scored with 6:26 remaining off a penalty corner to tie the game. It was one of eight shots for Carolina in the final period and one of 23 on the day. Lisa Slinkert scored the game-winning goal in overtime off a penalty stroke to give the Tar Heels the comeback win. UNC didn’t allow a single Princeton shot after halftime.

UNC will stay on the road next weekend when it visits Old Dominion on Sunday, September 10 before returning home on September 15 against Louisville.
