The undefeated UNC field hockey team will compete as the No. 1 overall seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels found out their seed Sunday night, as the entire tournament bracket was revealed.
“We’re proud to be one of eighteen teams still practicing this week,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said. “Congratulations to all the remaining teams. We’re looking forward to hosting in Chapel Hill this weekend and playing at least one more time on our home field.”
At 17-0, Carolina is the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament for the fourth time in five seasons, having won the championship in each of the other three instances. This will be the program’s 39th appearance in the tournament, which is a record among Division 1 teams. They also hold the records for tournament games played (102) and tournament wins (73).
Carolina will also host several tournament games at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill. On Wednesday, Delaware and Lehigh will face off for the right to face the Tar Heels on Friday at noon. Saint Joseph’s and Wake Forest will play at 2:30 p.m. later on Friday, with the day’s winners playing on Sunday at 1 p.m. Whichever team emerges from the Chapel Hill pod will head to the Final Four in Connecticut.
Joining Carolina in the 18-team field are four other ACC foes: Wake Forest, Virginia, Syracuse and Louisville. For a complete look at the bracket, click here.
