The UNC field hockey team is once again the No. 1 team in the land. The Tar Heels moved up on spot from No. 2 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll following No. 1 Northwestern’s first loss of the season. UNC received 35 of 41 first-place votes.

With the loss by the Wildcats, Carolina is the only undefeated team left in Division 1 field hockey. The Tar Heels sit at 8-0 and have not given up a goal since September 2. Since then, UNC has outscored its opponents 22-0 in five games, three of which came on the road.

Carolina has outshot its opponents by a combined 146-44 mark, which averages out to roughly an 18-5 advantage per game. UNC has only allowed six goals through eight games, with goalies Abigail Taylor and Kylie Walbert having to make just 16 saves. Erin Matson leads the offense with nine goals.

The Tar Heels have not trailed in a game since an August 28 win against Iowa in overtime. UNC trailed 2-0 before coming back to win 3-2. That game is the only loss on the Hawkeyes’ record, and they sit at No. 3 in the NFHCA poll, behind No. 2 Northwestern.

All seven of Carolina’s remaining regular-season opponents are also ranked in the poll. UNC’s next three games will all come on the road, with the first visit coming at No. 14 Liberty on Sunday at 1 p.m. For a full look at the NFHCA poll, click here.
