The No. 2 UNC field hockey team extended its winning streak to four games on Friday afternoon, shutting out No. 4 Louisville 2-0 in Chapel Hill. It’s the first ACC win in Erin Matson’s head coaching career.

Kiersten Thomassey opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, and the Carolina defense took it from there. The Cardinals managed just one shot in the entire first half. Despite improving on those numbers in the second half, Louisville only totaled one shot on goal for the game.

A fourth-quarter goal from Charly Bruder off a penalty corner iced the game for the Tar Heels. The Cardinals pulled their goalie soon after, but still did not send a shot toward UNC goalie Maddie Kahn’s cage. Kahn needed to make only one save on the day after recording a career-high seven last Sunday at Old Dominion.

The Tar Heels are now 5-1 on the season and will return to the road next Friday when they visit Wake Forest.
