The UNC football team got some sobering news during its second bye week. The team announced graduate defensive lineman Ray Vohasek would miss the remainder of the season with an upper-body injury. Vohasek did not play in the wins at Miami or Duke. Since the season is now past the four-game threshold for medical redshirts and Vohasek is in his last year of eligibility, his college career is over.

“Very disappointed for Ray,” head coach Mack Brown said Tuesday. “He’s one of our best players and a great young guy… we will miss him. It will hurt our team, but more than that, we hurt for him.”

According to Brown, Vohasek’s injury is serious enough that it will require surgery. In five games this season, Vohasek registered 14 total tackles, a tackle for loss and a pair of pass breakups. He made five tackles in the win at Appalachian State in September.

Vohasek will remain with the team while he rehabs his injury in a similar vein as running back British Brooks, who is serving as a de facto running back coach while recovering from an injury suffered during a preseason scrimmage.

“That’s a tough one for a senior who came back to help his team and have a better chance to play in the NFL,” Brown said of Vohasek. “So he’ll get his operation, he’ll rehab and try to get ready for Pro Day.”

Brown said he anticipates junior Kevin Hester, freshman Travis Shaw, sophomore Kedrick Bingley-Jones and redshirt freshman Keeshawn Silver to help fill the void left by Vohasek’s absence.

Carolina will face Pittsburgh in Kenan Stadium on October 29 at 8 p.m.
