The UNC club ice hockey team is adding an unexpected opponent to its 2024-25 schedule: the Carolina Hurricanes. The retired ones, anyway.
UNC announced an exhibition with the Hurricanes Alumni Team this week. The Hurricanes Alumni include Stanley Cup winners Cam Ward, Aaron Ward and Chad LaRose. The exhibition is scheduled for Friday, August 16 at Invisalign Arena, within the Wake Competition Center. The arena is located at 111-100 Competition Center Drive in Morrisville.
“Any opportunity to increase engagement and excitement around hockey in North Carolina is an opportunity worth pursuing,” said UNC head coach Adam Dauda. “I am extremely excited to see this vision come to life. My goal is to provide our players with a positive and memorable UNC hockey experience.”
Tickets are available here for $15 each. Attendees under the age of 18 can get in free of charge. Proceeds from the game will benefit the club ice hockey team.
The Tar Heels are set for a historic 2024-25 season, their last before moving to Division 1 status within the American College Hockey Association. The schedule includes an outdoor game against Virginia Tech at Truist Field in Charlotte on January 4.
The program also aims to build a 2,000-seat stadium for its games in the Carraway Village development off Eubanks Road, with the goal of having it complete within the next few years. The team currently plays home games at the Orange County Sportsplex in Hillsborough.
