The Diamond Heels fell 9-5 to Florida State in an elimination game at the Men’s College World Series on Tuesday afternoon. Carolina’s season is over after going 1-2 in Omaha.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 7-1 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, though Carolina cut that lead to 7-5 with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame thanks to a three-run home run by Vance Honeycutt and an RBI single by Jackson Van De Brake. The score stayed that way until the top of the ninth, when Florida State added a pair of insurance runs via back-to-back solo home runs. Carolina wasn’t able to muster any more walk-off magic in the bottom of the inning.
Tar Heel pitching issued nine walks to the Seminoles, including three in a two-run third inning which saw Florida State extend a 1-0 lead to 3-0. The floodgates opened in the fifth thanks to six Seminole hits against Dalton Pence, who was called in early after Aidan Haugh and Matthew Matthijs combined for just 2.1 innings pitched.
UNC ends the season with a 48-16 overall record after the program’s 12th trip to the Men’s College World Series. The Tar Heels lost five of their seven total games played at a neutral site.
