The Diamond Heels earned their third run-rule win in their last four games Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium, beating Charlotte 14-4. The game ended after UNC scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The comfortable win came after UNC was put in a hole early, as Charlotte homered twice against starting pitcher Camron Seagraves in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
A Luke Stevenson two-run home run started UNC’s offensive attack in the bottom of the inning, and Alex Madera tied the game at 3-3 on a single before a Charlotte error in the next at-bat allowed the go-ahead run to score. In the next inning, reigning ACC Player of the Week Gavin Gallaher doubled with the bases loaded to score all three runners, and the rout was on. UNC loaded the bases again in the third after Charlotte intentionally walked Stevenson, and the gamble backfired: Tyson Bass singled and Hunter Stokely drew a walk to bring in two more runs.
Kane Kepley and Jackson Van De Brake would combine to drive in UNC’s final five runs, and it was Van De Brake who hit the run-rule walk-off with a single to push the lead to 10 runs in the eighth. He and Kepley combined for five hits in 11 at-bats with three runs scored and five RBIs.
On the mound, Ryan Lynch earned his third win with three shutout innings in relief of Seagraves. Folger Boaz recorded the final eight outs of the game, striking out four 49ers in the process.
The Diamond Heels are now 29-8 overall, having won six straight games and 12 of their last 14. UNC will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Blacksburg for a three-game series at Virginia Tech. First pitch in Friday’s opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
