The Diamond Heels scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 6-5 deficit against visiting Kansas State and held off the Wildcats to win 12-9 at Boshamer Stadium.
A two-RBI single from catcher Luke Stevenson capped off the rally and a productive day at the plate for the star sophomore. Stevenson finished the night with two hits, three runs batted in and a run scored. The 2-3-4 combination of Tyson Bass, Stevenson and Rom Kellis combined for six runs batted in on the night.
Carolina rallied from three separate deficits during the game, first responding to a pair of Kansas State runs in the top of the first inning with four in the bottom half. After the Wildcats went back in front again in the sixth, Stevenson answered in the bottom of the inning with a game-tying single. Kansas State again took the lead in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for UNC’s five-run rally.
The Wildcats closed to within 10-9 with three runs in the eighth inning, but RBIs from Alex Madera and Gavin Gallaher gave Carolina critical insurance. Matthew Matthijs worked around a two-out walk in the top of the ninth to close the game out.
Matthijs was one of five UNC pitchers to see action. Folger Boaz started and lasted 2.1 innings while allowing a pair of runs. Cameron Padgett, Kyle Percival and Camron Seagraves followed before Matthijs recorded the final six outs. Seagraves was credited with the win, his first of his collegiate career.
With the win, the Diamond Heels are now 4-0 on the season. Carolina will be back in action when it visits East Carolina in Greenville for the first of a three-game series with the Pirates at 5 p.m. Friday. The second game, on Saturday, will be played in Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the finale will be played at Boshamer Stadium.
