The Diamond Heels scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break open a tie game and didn’t look back against George Mason Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, as UNC beat the Patriots 13-4. It was Carolina’s first completed home game in two weeks, after a home game against Presbyterian last week was called off due to rain in the early innings.
The eight-run explosion came after George Mason had scored three runs against UNC’s Ryan Lynch (all with two outs) in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 4-4 after trailing since the second inning.
The Carolina avalanche began after Tyson Bass drew a one-out walk, then advanced to third after a single from Alex Madera. Sam Angelo doubled to bring home both runners, then scored himself on a Carter French single. From there, five consecutive UNC batters would reach base, including Gavin Gallaher on a pair of errors by the George Mason defense (the Patriots committed five on the afternoon) which brought home both Luke Stevenson and Jackson Van De Brake. In total, 12 UNC batters would come to the plate in the inning. One more run came home in the eighth on a wild pitch.
Ryan Lynch earned the win, his fourth of the season. Walker McDuffie made his first career start and pitched a career-high 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three. Tom Chmielewski and Olin Johnson also pitched in the game, with Johnson recording the final six outs.
Every UNC batter in the starting lineup recorded either a hit or an RBI. Van De Brake drove in three runs, while Bass finished 2-4 with a home run.
The win improves the Diamond Heels to 34-10 overall this season and 22-5 at Boshamer Stadium. UNC will return to the diamond Wednesday evening when it hosts Queens at 6 p.m.
