Jason DeCaro carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and freshman Lee Sowers came up clutch in the seventh to help the Diamond Heels beat Wake Forest 3-2 and complete a three-game sweep of the Demon Deacons at Boshamer Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The UNC bats gave DeCaro early support with two runs in the bottom of the first, both of which scored on an error. Wake Forest wouldn’t get on the board until the top of the sixth, when the Deacons’ first two hits of the day cut the deficit to 2-1.

Wake then tied the game against Walker McDuffie in the seventh, loading the bases with one out and scoring via a walk. McDuffie worked his way out of trouble with the score still 2-2, setting up Sowers’ heroics in the bottom of the inning.

Alex Madera lay the groundwork with a one-out walk, then advanced to second base after the Wake Forest pitcher threw away a pick-off attempt. The freshman Sowers, making his first collegiate start at designated hitter, then slapped a 3-2 pitch into left field, scoring Madera after the throw to the plate was well offline.

With the lead in hand once again, McDuffie retired the final six Demon Deacon hitters in order (four by strikeout) to see out the sweep. He earned his third win in the process.

UNC has now completed three-game sweeps of Wake Forest in consecutive seasons. This year’s edition was Carolina’s first in ACC play and improves the team to 28-8 overall and 11-7 in conference play. The Diamond Heels have won five straight games and 11 of their last 13, and will be back in action when they host Charlotte at Boshamer Stadium Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
