The Diamond Heels brought the bats once again at Boshamer Stadium Saturday afternoon, and this time accompanied it with good enough pitching to clinch a much-needed win over Georgia Tech, 10-5.

Carolina fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first, but answered in a big way with a run in the bottom of the frame and then four more in the third. Danny Serretti got the four-run rally started with an RBI triple down the right field line to score Mac Horvath, and then came into score himself on a single from Alberto Osuna. Mikey Madej and Hunter Stokely picked up the final two RBIs of the inning.

The fourth saw the red-hot Mac Horvath touch off a booming home run to left field, making it four consecutive games with a home run for the sophomore from Minnesota. Freshman Vance Honeycutt sent UNC’s second home run of the day out of Boshamer Stadium in the seventh, just another one of Carolina’s 17 total hits. Serretti fell a home run short of the cycle on the day, adding a double and a single to his triple in the third.

Carolina has scored a combined 22 runs in its last two games, while banging out a combined 31 hits. Saturday was the eighth time in the 2022 season the Tar Heels have scored 10 or more runs. The team is 7-1 in such games, with Friday night’s 15-12 slugfest being the only loss.

On the mound, UNC got good work from starter Brandon Schaeffer, who tossed 5.2 innings to pick up his third win of the season. Nik Pry and Davis Palermo combined to cover the final 3.1 innings, though Palermo was only needed for the final out of the ballgame.

That out was a spectacular one, though, as right fielder Angel Zarate slid to snag a soft line drive off the bat of a Yellow Jacket to end the game and give Carolina its 22nd win of the season. The Tar Heels will have a chance to win their first series since March on Sunday in the rubber match of the weekend with Georgia Tech.
