The Diamond Heels built a massive lead and held off a desperate West Virginia rally in the late innings to beat the Mountaineers 12-7 and advance to the national championship series in Omaha this weekend.

Carolina led the entire game, scoring two runs in the first inning, three in the third, three in the fourth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to lead the Mountaineers 12-1. Owen Hull and Gavin Gallaher drove the UNC offense, each banging out four hits and combining for six RBI and five runs scored. Hull finished a home run shy of the cycle with a single, two doubles and a triple. It was his 30th multi-hit game of the season. Despite its 12-run showing, the Carolina offense did not hit a single home run — and only five of its 16 total hits went for extra bases.

As they did in Sunday’s win, the Diamond Heels took advantage of some sloppy West Virginia defense to do damage. In the first inning, Hull attempted to steal third and trotted home after the throw to the bag ended up in the outfield. In the fourth inning, UNC put runners on first and second with one out after another throwing error scuttled what would have been at least a fielder’s choice at second base. Hull doubled in both runners in the next at bat.

That offense stood in support of a collective pitching effort. Folger Boaz started the game but only lasted an inning after allowing an early run. Freshman Jackson Rose entered in relief and earned the win with 4.1 innings of shutout ball.

Carolina’s bullpen had to navigate some nervy final outs after the Mountaineers scored five runs with two outs in the seventh, cutting a 12-1 lead down to 12-6. UNC was forced to call upon Caden Glauber, who put out the fire and, despite allowing a solo home run in the eighth, saw the win out.

This is UNC’s first appearance in the national championship series since 2007, and the Diamond Heels have now won each of their first three games in Omaha for the first time since 2006. Carolina is 28-0 this season when Glauber pitches, 20-0 when scoring multiple runs in the first inning and 41-1 when leading by four or more runs at any times. The 12 runs scored were also Carolina’s most ever in a game at the Men’s College World Series.

The best-of-three national championship series begins Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. UNC will play either No. 3 overall seed Georgia or unseeded Oklahoma, who will face off in Omaha later Wednesday night in the second semifinal. The Sooners can clinch a championship series berth with a win, while Bulldogs will need to beat Oklahoma twice. Should Georgia win Wednesday, another semifinal game would be played Thursday.
